CA Reconnects During Reunion and Alum Weekend 2024

What a beautiful weekend it was to reunite in Concord, Mass.! From June 7 to 9, 2024, around 200 alums from across generations returned to Concord Academy. Reunion and Alum Weekend provided many opportunities for CA graduates and their families to connect.

Concord Academy Commencement Celebrates the Class of 2024

The morning of May 24 was sunny and warm—a beautiful time to celebrate Concord Academy’s newest graduates. The rhododendrons were in brilliant bloom as the class of 2024 processed down the Senior Steps in front of hundreds of guests in Academy Garden.

CA Celebrates Successful Spring 2024 Athletic Season

CA Athletics enjoyed another successful season, including Eastern Independent League (EIL) and New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) championships and a victory over Bancroft School in the third annual Spring Cup rivalry event. Student-athletes demonostrated Concord Academy’s values of teamwork, good sportsmanship, and competitive grit.

CA Business Speaker Series Celebrates Enterprising Alums

Concord Academy alums’ passions for learning, innovation, and adaptability have distinguished them as leaders in business. As part of CA’s spring 2024 Business Speaker Series, Layth Madi ’96, Lindsay Kolowich Cox ’09, and Vernard Lockhart ’04 spoke with students to share their experiences in moving organizations forward and offer advice for future entrepreneurs.

CA Environmental Symposium Features Sunrise Movement’s Audrey Lin ’19

Advocacy was the topic of this year’s Environmental Symposium, a one-semester evening course open to all Concord Academy Students. The final speaker in the three-part series was Audrey Lin ’19, who walked students through the advocacy approach of the Sunrise Movement, organized by young people to stop climate change and create millions of good-paying jobs in the process.

Lunch and Learn with Caroline Griswold Short ’06, Director of Programming at Generation Hope

On December 11, hosted by CA’s Social Justice Club, Caroline Griswold Short ’06 spoke with around 30 community members as part of CA’s Lunch and Learn series, a new opportunity in the 2020–21 school year for Concord Academy alumnae/i to connect with current students and share their expertise. Short spoke about her work as the director of programing at Generation Hope, a Washington, D.C., nonprofit that helps teen parents earn college degrees while also helping prepare their children for kindergarten.

Two New Wilcox Fellows Join the CA Faculty

CA welcomed two new Wilcox Fellows for the 2020–21 academic year: Zora Vermilya in English and Shamime Shaw in the film program. Begun in 2000, this fellowship program identifies and nourishes talented teachers from groups underrepresented on independent school faculties. Fellows are mentored by a colleague, and they workshop pedagogy with both experienced and new faculty members. Half-time teaching loads allow fellows to put energy into developing expertise and skill in their fields and engagements across school life.

Who Counts as American?

Through the We Are America Project, co-founded by Jessica Lander ’06 and her former students at Lowell High School in Massachusetts, young people around the United States are making history personal by telling their own stories of migration, family, community, loss, friendship, and belonging. Their voices are starting a national conversation about what it means to be American.

Envisioning a More Equitable School: Q&A with Dean of Academic Program and Equity Rob Munro

Class of 2020 Senior Projects

In a typical spring, Concord Academy’s senior projects presentation is a brief, intense event, as seniors armed with poster board, models, and PowerPoint slides pack into the Ransome Room or SHAC atrium, ready to share with faculty and fellow students what they have learned about topics like sustainable eating or mass incarceration. In spring 2020, when school went remote, seniors had to adapt their presentations for an online audience. For some, that meant out-of-the-box thinking, and videos instead of posters. For others, it meant a process — and final product — even better than they originally imagined.

Caring for All

Professionals in emergency medicine in the U.S. are used to seeing the effects of health inequities every day. As the coronavirus is testing hospitals, young doctors, nurses, and medical scribes are learning on the job.
