Concord Academy is dedicated to fostering a more just and sustainable future. This year, science teacher Chris Labosier became CA’s Environmental Sustainability and Justice Coordinator, collaborating with the community and Environmental Sustainability Committee to develop strategic programs aimed at lessening the school’s environmental impact.
“Much like education, sustainability is inherently future-focused,” Labosier says. “Sometimes we get to see the positive results of our efforts immediately, but more often than not, we’re planting seeds for the future. So to work in sustainability, we must be hopeful. We have to envision a better future and actively take meaningful and deliberate steps forward.”
With the support of Labosier, students have been making meaningful contributions to sustainability at CA. A grant from the Green Revolving Fund administered this school year supported student Xander Grossman ’26 in installing remote-controlled smart outlets in the Main School building, the Math and Arts Center, Aloian House, and Belknap House to reduce energy consumption. “I am excited to be able to help shape the future of sustainability at CA,” Xander says.
The school has also partnered with Windover Construction for a drone-assisted thermal imaging scan. This collaborative effort, spearheaded by Mick McSorley P’27, aims to pinpoint heat loss areas within school buildings.
The Environmental Co-Heads Xander Grossman ’26, Laila Mooraj ’24, Zach Miller ’24, and William Kim ’24 have initiated a new sustainability dashboard funded by the Class of 1972 Green Seed Fund. The tracking of sustainability progress at CA through the dashboard will begin in the 2024–25 school year. The software will break down environmental initiatives into actionable metrics and measure progress to reduce the school’s climate impact and emissions.
