Dave Cavell is a lawyer and public servant who is special assistant to the president and director of speechwriting for Vice President Kamala Harris. This is his second time serving at the White House after serving as a presidential speechwriter for President Obama and Mrs. Obama from 2015 to 2017. In the 2020 campaign cycle, he ran for Congress in the Massachusetts 4th Congressional District Democratic primary. Prior to his campaign, he spent two years as senior advisor and assistant attorney general for then-Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey, which included working with her to sue the Trump administration (more than 50 times) and combat the opioid crisis. For the first year of the Biden-Harris Administration, he served as senior advisor to Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry, and traveled extensively with him as part of his work to combat the global climate crisis. He began his career as a 4th grade homeroom teacher at a public school in the South Bronx, New York, as part of the Teach for America program, where he occasionally wore his Red Sox jersey to school. While at Concord Academy, he made the questionable decision to commute 90 minutes on the commuter rail from Brookline every day and committed a number of errors as catcher on the CA baseball team.
