CA Celebrates Successful Spring Athletic Season
CA athletics enjoyed another successful season including Eastern Independent League (EIL) and New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) championships and a victory over Bancroft School in the second annual Spring Cup rivalry event. Student-athletes displayed Concord Academy’s values of teamwork, good sportsmanship, and competitive grit.
On the strength of an undefeated league record, boys varsity tennis captured the 2023 EIL championship, which marked back-to-back titles for the program! The team earned the No. 3 seed to the NEPSAC tournament and upset the No. 2 seed, Wheeler School, in a closely fought semifinal. CA advanced to the Class C NEPSAC championship match for the second year in a row and once again brought back the runner-up trophy, capping off a most impressive two-year run of excellence. The boys junior varsity tennis team also enjoyed a very successful season, going undefeated until the final week.
The girls and boys track and field teams competed in the EIL championships and both took home second-place plaques—the best combined finish in the program’s history. The girls team finished a close second to The Winsor School, while the boys team trailed only the defending champions, Portsmouth Abbey. CA also had several individual EIL champions. Asia Jaycobs ’23 won the 800-meter and 1,500-meter races, Grace Chen ’23 won the 3,000-meter race, Ben Bartlett ’24 won the pole vault, and Axel Bostrom ’24 won the discus in only his third time competing in the event. Overall, 34 different CA athletes scored points, giving CA the highest combined point total of all the EIL schools competing. At the NEPSAC championship meet, CA track athletes ran, threw, and jumped to over a dozen personal bests and three school records. The boys 4×400 team of Grace Kalere ’24, Christian Setalsingh-Nazaire ’23, Fraol Nigusse ’24, and Emerson Koch ’24 became the first CA relay team to win a NEPSAC title, winning a thrilling race with Groton School that came down to the last few meters.
The girls varsity tennis squad enjoyed a very successful season. Building off the momentum of its NEPSAC tournament berth last May, the team carried an unblemished record to the last match of the regular season in spring 2023. On the strength of its 9-1 record, the team earned a No. 2 seed to the NEPSAC tournament, marking its sixth consecutive bid. With a resounding 5–1 victory over the Millbrook School in the quarterfinals, the team advanced to the semis, where they eventually fell to a strong Greens Farms Academy squad. Though ultimately falling short of the finals, CA girls tennis impressively continues to be a regular in the Class C NEPSAC tournament.
The all-gender varsity sailing team enjoyed a winning season in the very competitive Mass Bay League (MBL). The team posted a 6–3 record in races up and down the North Shore.
Despite being a very young squad in 2023, the varsity all-gender Ultimate Frisbee team once again enjoyed a strong performance at the NEPSAC championships. The team competed well against larger school programs and fell just short of winning the B pool title.
The girls varsity lacrosse program finished just a shade under .500 with three nail-biting close victories over tough league opponents. The boys varsity lacrosse program also finished just under .500 with a young squad that steadily improved throughout the season under the direction of new head coach, Ken Sarni. With only one senior on the team in 2023, the program is excited for next season!
The varsity baseball team had a slow start to the season but finished strong by winning three of its last five games under the direction of a new head coach, Jim Collis. The softball program’s youthful roster improved tremendously over the season under the direction of new head coach Jacquie Diffley. Look for the team to make some noise in the EIL in 2024.
CA’s baseball, tennis, and lacrosse teams traveled to the Bancroft School to compete in the second annual Spring Cup rivalry event on April 28. With victories in four of five games, CA successfully defended the cup, having won it in 2022. We look forward to hosting Bancroft at home in spring 2024.
