Community Impact Statement

For over 100 years, Concord Academy has served our students and the wider community as a mission-based nonprofit organization. At CA, we appreciate the town that hosts us and recognize the important role we play in supporting and enriching the Concord community. As one of the largest employers in town and as a source of educational and cultural resources, our impact extends far beyond the learning that takes place in our classrooms. Here is a look at some of the ways we contribute to the local economy and to community wellbeing.

Economic Impact

Employment: Concord Academy is proud to employ over 280 faculty and staff members, making us one of the largest employers in Concord. These jobs provide stability and contribute to the local economy.

Spending Power: Concord Academy directly supports local business through purchases for goods, services, and operations. During the 2023–24 school year, the school paid out over $973,000 to vendors located within Concord.

Local Commerce: As an open campus located steps from Main Street, CA students, faculty, and staff also contribute to the local economy through spending on food, entertainment, and other retail activities.

Tourism: Concord Academy hosts approximately 10 major events each year, attracting visitors from out of town and driving demand for local hotels, restaurants, retail shops, and transportation.

Community Engagement and Support

Local Donations: Concord Academy is committed to supporting local organizations that serve the town. In recent examples, the school contributed $10,000 to the town gift fund for Concord 250 and $10,000/year over the course of five years to support the Concord Free Public Library.

Volunteerism: Our students and staff dedicate over 150 hours each year to local service projects. Some recent examples have included the Lawrence Community Action Project, Massachusetts Youth Climate Summit, and the Concord Park Senior Living Center.

Education: 28 Concord Academy students are residents of Concord, making up 7% of our student population. These students received over $251,000 in financial aid in the 2023–24 school year. The school also dedicates two established funds to Concord residents including the Elizabeth B. Hall Scholarship fund which supports financial aid for a student who is the child of a Concord town employee and the Local Day Student Fund which supports financial aid for an academically qualified, local day student.

Long-Term Commitment to Concord: Over 200 Concord Academy alums have moved to Concord to live, work, and raise families after graduation from CA.

Campus Facilities and Infrastructure

Community Spaces: Concord Academy opens its doors to the community by offering free or discounted use of our facilities to town departments, providing holiday meals to town service providers, granting youth recreation leagues use of our athletics facilities, sharing our parking lots during construction of the Concord Free Public Library and Concord250 celebrations, and giving scholarships to local families for our summer camps. Community groups, including Concord Chamber Music Society and Concord Community Chest, also make use of our campus spaces at free and reduced rates.

Municipal Spaces: Concord Academy contributes financially to municipal projects, including funding improvements to streetlights, sidewalks, and crosswalks as well as snow removal on Main Street.

Sustainability: Concord Academy shares the town of Concord’s dedication to sustainability, including a commitment of $1 million to environmentally sustainable construction practices and $400,000 in Green Revolving Funds towards sustainability initiatives. The new West Campus project featuring the Centennial Arts Center (C.A.C.) includes a fossil-fuel-free climate system, air-source heat pumps, a roof solar array, and high levels of building envelope insulation. The lawn field behind the C.A.C, once regularly mowed, is being transformed into a pollinator meadow, promoting greater biodiversity. Additionally, the school’s sustainability committee, with student input and influence, supports the town’s sustainability efforts by encouraging the school community to reduce waste, conserve water, compost more, and drive less.
