The Ballast of Iridescence
How much does hope weigh?
What happens to the vivid, neon-bright colors of childhood when they collide with the heavy, shadowed reality of being an adult? The Ballast of Iridescence is an evening-length exploration of that collision.
The stage is a playground filled with balloons, a giant parachute, a pyramid, and see-saws—where the buoyant energy of jazz and hip-hop meets the grounded, melancholic weight of contemporary movement. It is a work that exists in the tension between the floating and the falling. Using a palette that shifts from the heat of reds, oranges, and yellows into the bruised depths of indigo and black, the piece suggests that even in our most melancholic moments, there is a resilient, childlike hope that refuses to be extinguished. It is a celebration of the “work” of play and the gravity that makes us human.
