The 2016–17 Feature Film course production, Much Ado About Nothing, was Concord Academy’s third feature-length film and the first movie musical from CA Films. The yearlong project was developed in collaboration with the CA Dance Company and CA musicians and involved four classes of students in music, dance, and film. With a screenplay co-written by Jared Green ’88 and original music by the Magnetic Fields (a band that includes Claudia Gonson ’86 and Sam Davol ’88), Much Ado About Nothing was a multigenerational CA endeavor.
This musical adaptation of the witty comedy by Shakespeare flits between the 1950s, the 1980s, and 2017. Characters switch genders, further complicating Shakespeare’s romantic plot twists. The film is a contemporary play on gender identity and expression. Its tagline: “The path to love isn’t always straight.”
Much Ado About Nothing premiered for the CA community in May 2017. This spring, the film was submitted to festivals for consideration. Director and film teacher Justin Bull recently shared the soundtrack of covers from The Magnetic Fields songbook, produced by Nivedhan Singh and featuring the voices and musical talents of many students and faculty within the CA community.
