I am very pleased to announce that Laura Twichell has agreed to serve as CA’s interim academic dean for 2019–20, beginning on July 1. She is respected for her skills as a learning leader, her commitment to issues of equity and inclusion, and her thoughtful approach to mentoring students. I am thrilled that Laura will now bring those skills to the senior admin team.

A CA graduate from the class of 2001, Laura earned a Diplôme Spécial d’études Françaises at the Université Paul Valéry in Montpellier, France, in 2003. She began her teaching career in 2006 at the Hyde School in Connecticut following her graduation from Swarthmore College, where she earned a B.A. in biology and French. After two years at Hyde, Laura joined the faculty at CA. She taught in both the English and Modern and Classical Languages Departments, helped to establish the current structure of the Academic Support Center, and also tutored students in English, French, biology, and study skills. Laura founded the first Critical Friends Group at CA, a professional learning model that has been a mainstay at CA ever since. She left CA in 2012 to pursue a master’s degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education; she then took a position at the Acera School in Winchester during the 2013–14 academic year as a middle school interdisciplinary teacher. She returned to CA in 2014, rejoining the English Department, and then stepping in as Assistant Dean for Community and Equity in 2015. She lives off-campus with her husband, Chris, and son, Xavi.

I want to convey my gratitude to Marie Myers, director of enrollment management, and Sarah, Yeh, dean of faculty, for their partnership through the interview and decision-making process. Their energy, wisdom, and warmth were integral to the success of this process, and I am grateful to them for their help.

Please join me in thanking and congratulating Laura Twichell for stepping in as interim academic dean for the coming year.

Sincerely,
RGH
