The girls varsity squash team traveled to the Pomfret School last week with the goal of competing well in the Class C NEPSAC tournament against formidable competition from across the region. Match after match CA players earned hard fought victories resulting in all 7 players finishing in the top 5 of their flight. As a result, CA secured the highest prize of the day, the Class C NEPSAC championship trophy. Impressively, CA’s march to the top step of the podium included wins over 3 higher ranked opponents. A championship banner will be raised to the rafters of the gym this spring to honor the team’s stunning championship run.
“The tournament was remarkable in that all 7 of our players had to maintain an incredibly high level of play over a grueling two days of squash,” said Charlotte Whitmore, the GVS coach. “Our final three matches were very close and it took extreme mental toughness for our girls to pull off those wins, which we needed in order to capture the championship.”
“I could not be more proud of my team,” said Maren Taylor’17, GVS co-captain. “We would not have won the NEPSAC championship without all seven girls putting their all into every match and fighting the hard fight. It was a truly amazing thing to be apart of and such an incredible way to end my last season on this team.”
This is the first NEPSAC championship for the squash program, and the fourth in CA’s history.
