Live an Attentive Life:Assistant Head of School and Academic Dean John Drew P’15 ’19 Gives Parting Commencement Address in CA’s 97th Year

On May 31, a day of hope and promise, Concord Academy celebrated its 97th graduating class. A mixture of solemnity and high spirits marked the occasion, on which Assistant Head and Academic Dean John Drew P’15 ’19, soon to depart CA to become the head of the White Mountain School in Bethlehem, N.H., delivered the Commencement address. Some of his advice for CA’s newly minted alumnae/i: “Being awake to your surroundings is essential. You and the world both need that attention and connection.”

Nick Hiebert Parent Book Discussion Rescheduled for January 30

CA English teacher Nick Hiebert will be leading a discussion of No Ashes in the Fire by Darnell Moore on Wednesday, January 30, at 6 p.m at a parent’s home in Concord. The CA faculty book group read this book last month in the context of ongoing discussions about inclusion at CA. Nick will bridge their discussions to ours as we reflect upon the relevance of the issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the CA community, as well as other topics raised by the book. Fall Academic, Athletic, and House Comments Available January 10

Parents will be able to view their child’s fall term academic comments, house comments for boarders, and fall season athletic comments starting Thursday, January 10. The advisor report will be available later in the month (around January 22). Access to these reports is available through the parent portal.

June Trip Applications Being Reviewed

June trip applications are currently being reviewed by trip chaperones. There are still a few spots left, so please review this attachment, which contains descriptions and costs of all of the trips being offered. Students interested in participating should complete the application that was sent to them, which is a requirement for being considered. Please talk with your child about their interested in participating in one of the summer trips and encourage them to complete the application as soon as possible.

CCO Workshop for Juniors and Junior Parents on January 12

We hope junior parents can join us on Saturday, January 12, at 9 a.m. in the P.A.C. for the formal beginning of the college planning process. Required for all juniors, this meeting serves as an introduction to the year ahead. The program will feature remarks from Rick Hardy as well as the college counseling staff, a presentation by a dean of admissions, and a Q&A panel with current CA seniors.

Gap Year Fairs: January 12, 13, and 14

The CCO encourages seniors considering a gap year to attend one of the local gap year fairs taking place on January 12, 13, and 14. In attendance will be over 30 vendors representing internship, travel, and service opportunities, domestically and abroad. For more information, please visit this site.

Concord Academy’s 2018 Holiday Music Concert

On Friday, December 14, the Elizabeth B. Hall Chapel resounded with songs of cheer at CA’s annual Holiday Music Concert. The Concord Academy community gathered to celebrate the holiday season and support the many musicians performing: the Chorus, Concord Academy Singers, Chamber Orchestra and Ensembles, and several student-led singing groups.

Senior Holiday Chapel on Thursday, December 20

Each year the senior class performs for the entire boarding community on the final night of the semester. The performances range from musical performances to readings based on a winter or holiday theme. This year’s performance will take place on Thursday, December 20, beginning at 7 p.m. in the Chapel. All senior parents are welcome to attend. Prior to the performance, the senior class will take part in a community dinner.

2018–19 Winter Break Schedule

December 14, 2018

The 2018–19 winter break schedule is as follows: Boarding students should depart on Friday, December 21, by 12 noon when houses close. There will be a bus to Logan Airport and South Station that departs at 9 a.m. Boarding students should plan to return on Monday, January 7, between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. The bus will pick up at Logan Airport at 7 p.m. and at South Station at 7:15 p.m. Classes resume on Tuesday, January 8.
