Composer-in-Residence Stefanie Lubkowski Is Getting Students Involved in Creating New Music

March 26, 2019

Usually, the Chameleon Chamber Players listen to unfamiliar pieces before trying to play them. But this year, the five-member advanced ensemble had a chance to approach music differently thanks to a gift of funding for Concord Academy’s new composer-in-residence, Stefanie Lubkowski. In addition to teaching individual lessons in composition, Lubkowski has included student-musicians in the creation and development of an entirely new work. Her approach speaks to one of her main professional goals: to help young people see writing music as a dynamic process.

Lunafest this Saturday, March 30

March 24, 2019

Together with Advocates for Women’s Empowerment, CA’s Community & Equity Office is proud to co-host the sixth annual Lunafest! A juried women’s film festival that is shown in over 175 locations annually, Lunafest supports women’s nonprofits and the work of female filmmakers. Films are moving, sometimes funny, and always amazing. This year’s films were chosen from more than 100 worldwide entries. The lineup features eight provocative films made by and about women that tackle issues such as immigration, sexuality, parenthood, racism, and identity. Lunafest is appropriate for ages 11 and up.

We are proud to announce our 2019 beneficiary, Dignity in Asylum, a local female-led organization that provides safe transitional housing and support for asylum seekers, refugees, people who have been granted asylum, and unaccompanied minors at risk of homelessness. Their work is crucial and depends on our support.

The event will be on March 30 at Concord Academy’s Performing Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. (Doors open at 7 p.m.) There will be a raffle and refreshments. Bring your friends for a fun night! You may purchase tickets here.

Urged by CA Students, Concord Select Board Approves Resolution in Support of a Green New Deal

March 6, 2019

“Only one world” and “No more excuses” read the signs a Concord Academy student delegation carried down Main Street toward the Concord Town House, where 10 CA students appeared before the Concord Select Board on February 19. Organizing as part of Sunrise, a national youth movement to address climate change and create millions of jobs in the process, the students were some of many around the country appealing to city councils, town boards, and county commissions last week, in the hope that widespread local support will push federal action on the Green New Deal resolutions now before Congress. They were successful in urging the town of Concord to pass a symbolic resolution calling on the federal government to support the legislation.
