Filmmaker Catherine Saalfield Gund ’83, Honored with the 2018 Joan Shaw Herman Award, Speaks at CA

The powerful independent documentary films that Catherine Saalfield Gund ’83 has created over her more than 20 years as a director and producer — films that partner with activists and support movements for social justice — have earned her critical acclaim and Emmy nominations. This spring, they also earned a distinction unique to Concord Academy graduates, the Joan Shaw Herman Award for Distinguished Service. Gund accepted the award in a recorded speech for fellow alumnae/i during her 30th reunion in June and returned to campus on October 18 to speak with CA students, faculty, and staff about her work, her personal journey, and the movements that matter immensely to her. Her talk left the CA community deeply moved and inspired.

Save the Date! The Annual Alumnae/i Association Assembly will be Friday, June 7, 2019

The Concord Academy Alumnae/i Association invites all of you to this year’s Alumnae/i Association Assembly on Friday, June 7, 2019. An evolution of the annual meeting, the assembly is a chance to bring all alumnae/i together to hear important updates from school leadership and to be part of the conversation as we approach CA’s Centennial in 2022. During this time, the Joan Shaw Herman Award will be presented to the 2019 recipient and the alumnae/i community will also vote on the Alumnae/i Association officers for terms commencing in the fall of 2019. Following the assembly, everyone is invited to catch up with former faculty and friends across generations at the Alumnae/i Welcome Celebration as we kick off Reunion weekend!

Below is the preliminary schedule of the afternoon:

3:00 & 4:00 p.m. — Campus Tour + Highlights
4:00 p.m. — Alumnae/i of Color Reception
5:00-6:30 p.m. — Annual Alumnae/i Association Assembly
7:00 p.m. — Alumnae/i Welcome Celebration

The assembly festivities will take place on-campus. For those who cannot make it back to CA, the assembly will be live-streamed (the link will be available closer to the date). You can expect to see an invitation in your mailbox in April! Whether you were last on campus for reunion, or haven’t been back since graduating, we hope you will make plans to return to Concord this June.

Alumnae/i & Students of Color Conference 2019

Karen McAlmon ’75 and Adil Bahalim ’02, co-chairs of the Alumnae/i Community and Equity Committee, invite alumnae/i of color to campus for an afternoon of identity-centered leading and learning. Join current students of color to explore what it means to navigate the world as young people of color today. Dr. Liza Talusan will lead us in conversation as we examine experiences, culture, and climate at CA and beyond.

Opening Concord Academy’s 97th School Year, Convocation Remarks Ground the Community in CA’s History, Traditions, and Opportunities for Individual Influence

On September 4, CA welcomed returning students, faculty, and staff to Concord Academy’s 97th school year in the Elizabeth B. Hall Chapel. Head of School Rick Hardy encouraged new students and teachers to embrace the opportunities that this new beginning brings. Fay Lampert Shutzer ’65, president of the Board of Trustees, recalled her own senior chapel talk. Student Head of School Ananya Pani ’19 urged students to understand how they as individuals can nurture CA’s mission. And Dean of Faculty Sarah Yeh spoke about CA as the school her mother attended, the lasting influence of faculty emerita Sylvia Mendenhall, and of the chapel tradition.
