Concord Academy’s mission is deeply rooted in service to others and the world at large. CA challenges its students to balance individual freedom with responsibility and citizenship as part of a broader community, a value that resonates with our alumnae/i in throughout their lives. It is only fitting that as a school CA chooses to bestow only one award each year – one in recognition of service – a true testament to CA’s lasting impact and proud tradition of nurturing difference-makers.

The Joan Shaw Herman Award is presented each year during reunion weekend to a member of the CA community who has demonstrated dedication to service in either a professional or volunteer capacity. Past recipients come from a variety of fields from the arts to medicine, social justice, environmentalism, education, and more. We celebrate our graduates and faculty for leading by example, and making their mark on the world through service to others.
