Mathematics
Department Philosophy
The primary objective of the mathematics curriculum at Concord Academy is to help students develop the mathematical techniques and problem-solving skills that they will need for college work in mathematics and science. The courses emphasize a logical and intuitive development of the techniques in order to provide students with a thorough understanding of the underlying concepts. The department hopes that students will experience the creative aspects of mathematical thought as well as the power of mathematics to solve everyday problems.
The department allows students flexibility in how they advance through the curriculum. For instance, students enter the program at the most appropriate course based on their prior experience in mathematics and their ability to absorb new concepts quickly. For most students, and especially those for whom math anxiety has been significant in the past, the regular path through algebra, geometry, and precalculus is appropriate. Students who can progress at a faster rate through the curriculum may take the accelerated courses, which present the same material in less time. If students wish to accelerate even faster by working through a course on their own or with a tutor, we simply require that they demonstrate their proficiency before moving beyond that course. Most students choose to enroll in a mathematics course every semester until graduation.
The department members have considerable freedom in how they approach the material of any course. Some instructors prefer to have technology drive the exercises, some use project-based learning, and some like to supplement the material with a wide assortment of examples from all over the mathematical universe. In all cases, the essential content remains unchanged, but the diversity of teaching styles and perspectives provides a rich and comprehensive learning experience for CA students.
