Department Philosophy

Students arrive in our CA English classrooms eager to discuss their favorite books. Many of them also enjoy expressing their feelings and thoughts through journal-keeping or creative writing. Our hope as English teachers is to nourish this love of reading and writing as we guide students to a more mature, more skillful approach to literature and language.

English classes at Concord Academy are designed to help students become more critical and perceptive in their reading, more organized and persuasive in their writing, more expressive in their use of language, and more confident in voicing their opinions, feelings, and questions. Classes are small and highly interactive, and students at every level write frequently. Because good writing flows from clear thinking, both literature and writing classes seek to develop in students a habit of critical thinking and an ability to support their ideas with compelling proof.
